Welcome to the Northern Umbrella! Our mission is to help with gathering together all of us who want a better North of England, and want to share ideas and collaborate across the North’s many cities and places to build it.
We started this site with the idea of compiling a digest of specifically Northern groups and organisations who in some way or another are working to improve the quality of life in the North. We will return to that task as soon as possible.
But right now in 2018, we have decided that nothing is more important to our mission than “uniting the North against Brexit”.
The next big thing in this campaign will be Leeds for Europe‘s Great Northern Stop Brexit Conference: Creating a Vision of a New Britain Without Brexit in Leeds on Saturday, 8 September 2018. See you there!
Background to Northern Umbrella
We started in 2016 as a response to the challenge of Big Issue North magazine to create an alternative Northern Powerhouse partnership that is genuinely inclusive. Read Paul Salveson’s original article here and William Bolton’s reply here.
As our first activity we have started compiling a digest of specifically Northern groups and organisations who in some way or another are working to improve the quality of life in the North. Please take a look at our directory pages.
We have been hugely impressed by the political and cultural renaissance that is currently going on in Scotland. As a simple slogan, we want the North to get its act together like Scotland has: not to look on in envy, but to get on with creating our own version of it suitable for the North. Part of this means recognising that the North needs more of its own political institutions and media.
We are building a contact list of people who are interested in the idea and want to hear more. Send us an email to: northern.umbrella [at] hotmail.com
